Chapter 2.3 · Policy & Document Architecture

Two Lessons. The first builds the architecture: the hierarchy of policy, standard, procedure and guideline, and how the documents connect without duplication or orphans. The second is the craft: writing a policy that sets direction rather than configuration, and governing it through a lifecycle that includes the exceptions the real world will demand.

Objectives

  • Explain how policies, standards, procedures and guidelines fit together, and what a document architecture is.
  • Write a policy statement at the altitude of intent, not configuration.
  • Govern a policy through its lifecycle, and handle non-compliance honestly through a documented exception process.
